I’m also not a medical professional, so before you start any new workout routines or change your eating habits, sometimes it’s best to talk to your doctor! Use your best judgement about these two decisions, you know your body best.
Home workouts can be just as effective as going to the gym! I’ve put together a list of easy and affordable list of necessities to have at your fingertips. Having a mat is crucial to being able to work out effectively at home. Why? Because when you’re doing any type of floor work, whether it be abs or stretches, having that cushion allows you to focus on the work you’re doing rather than the fact that your butt, hip, or back is digging into the floor. My favorite type of mat by BalanceFrom and you can find on Amazon. It’s super thick and it has an awesome little strap that makes for good storage.
Light Weights and Heavier Weights
Talk about vague, right? Light and heavier are obviously very relative. If you’re just starting out with your workout but have been doing other types of activity, I recommend 8 lb and 5 lb. However, if you are just starting to work out all-together I recommend 5 lb and 3 lb.
Now, before you tune me out and decide you don’t want a workout video because you think you’re supposed to jump around in leotards and sweatbands with frizzy permed hair, hear me out!
Workout videos are NOT what they used to be. They have been updated and really are made for those that are looking to make a real difference in the way their body looks.
I am a big fan of Jillian Michaels and I have been for a long time. I recommend getting started with her videos and finding out a groove that you like. There’s also Zumba which is great for at home work outs as well. They are two completely different methods, so choose your flavor and go with what you will enjoy!
Bonus – Foam roller
Two words that will change the way you stretch and repair your muscles – foam roller. Take it from someone that has lived their entire life with knotted up muscles from playing sports, training, and being a stress ball; the foam roller is like candy to your muscles. Literally can’t say enough good things about it. When I was pregnant, this thing was my bestest best friend. Feel me?
Now that I’m a year postpartum, back up to high number of miles and now doing Crossfit as my cross training, this is like chocolate syrup to my muscles.
Don’t be a square – get a foam roller. Okay I’m not funny but you get my point!
IMPORTANT- if you have never used a foam roller. Please take a look at this quick video from Runtastic Fitness for some instructions on how to use it. 🙂
